Yangqin and Percussion Performer

Proficient in both yangqin and percussion, I can deliver traditional Chinese melodies with my fingertips as well as create dynamic rhythms.

Biography

I am a yangqin performer. I began formal training on the yangqin at the age of five under the tutelage of a professional teacher who holds a Master's degree from the Central Conservatory of Music, which has laid a solid foundation for my musical expertise. During my studies, I received guidance from Gui Xili, a renowned yangqin performer and educator. I have won the First Prize at the Beijing Off-campus Art Festival on multiple occasions, and taken part in various campus, public welfare and artistic performances across Beijing, gaining extensive stage experience.

In my middle school years, I served as the principal yangqin player of the Jinfan Traditional Chinese Orchestra, regularly participating in rehearsals, competitions and large-scale performances. As the principal player, I took on core performing responsibilities for the yangqin section, and developed an in-depth understanding of part coordination, rhythm control and stage presentation through ensemble performances.

After moving to New Zealand, I have continued to perform actively with local traditional Chinese music ensembles. To meet the requirements of orchestral formation and repertoire, I also play a variety of percussion instruments in addition to the yangqin. As a hammered string instrument, the yangqin features both melodic expressiveness and distinct rhythmic qualities. This enables me to skillfully manage rhythmic layers, tonal variations and ensemble coordination when playing percussion, delivering steady and expressive rhythmic support for musical works of diverse styles.

Currently, I perform both the yangqin and percussion parts as required by the orchestra. Years of professional training, experience as a principal player and overseas ensemble practice allow me to deliver consistent performances in various settings and contribute to the overall artistic presentation of the orchestra.
