Melodies of Traditional Chinese Music Nurture Young Hearts

To promote the overseas dissemination of fine traditional Chinese culture and build a bridge for multicultural communication, the New Zealand Chinese Orchestra launched a series of popularization tours of Chinese folk music across various local areas from 2025 to 2026. The orchestra visited numerous primary and secondary schools as well as kindergartens, bringing melodious Chinese folk music to overseas campuses and delivering a unique aesthetic experience of traditional Chinese culture for local children.

At the events, performers presented classic traditional Chinese musical instruments including the erhu, guzheng and bamboo flute. Through engaging explanations, live performances and interactive sessions, they introduced the features of these instruments, the culture of folk music and the stories behind the melodies to the children. The mellow tones of string instruments, clear sounds of bamboo flutes and lively rhythms of the guzheng echoed one after another, with a selection of light-hearted classic pieces performed in succession. The children watched the performances up close and immersed themselves in the music. In a relaxed and joyful atmosphere, they appreciated the charm of oriental melodies and experienced the unique allure of traditional Chinese music firsthand.

Different from ordinary performances, this series of activities focuses on cultural popularization and fun interaction. It explains folk music knowledge in a way easy for children to understand, breaking down barriers of geography and language. The beautiful melodies transcend cultural boundaries. They not only enrich aesthetic education on campus, but also enable overseas young people to gain a direct understanding of traditional Chinese art, sowing seeds of cultural integration in their hearts.

Music serves as a bond connecting China and foreign countries. This large-scale campus tour has popularized Chinese folk music abroad and acted as a vivid platform for cross-cultural exchanges. The events have won unanimous praise from teachers and students of all participating schools and kindergartens, with every venue filled with a warm and harmonious atmosphere.

Going forward, we will continue to carry out public welfare activities that bring folk music into campuses. We hope to let more overseas teenagers get to know and fall in love with Chinese folk music, allow the age-old melodies of traditional Chinese culture to resonate endlessly on foreign lands, and continuously facilitate friendly cultural exchanges between China and the rest of the world.
